Claire and Jim were friends, lovers, and sometimes enemies for 27 years. In order to get health insurance, they finally married, calling their anniversary the "It Means Absolutely Nothing" day. Then Jim was diagnosed with cancer. With ever-decreasing odds of survival, punctuated by arcs of false hope, Jim's deteriorating health altered their well-established independence as they became caregiver and patient, sharing intimacy as close as their own breaths.

A year and a half into their marriage, Jim died from lung/brain cancer. Sustained by good dogs and gardening through the two years of madness that followed, Claire soldiered through home repairs, career disaster, genealogy quests, and "dating for seniors" trying to build a better life on the debris of her old one.

Leave the Dogs at Home maps and plays with the stages of grief. Delightfully confessional, it challenges persistent, yet outdated, societal norms about relationships, and finds relief in whimsy, pop culture, and renewed spirituality.

My usual bedtime reading lasts a half hour til I fall asleep. I was awake for 3 hours with this book. It is beautifully written, masterfully paced and a deeply personal exploration of a complex relationship and a husband's demise. Claire's grief became mine and I couldn't stop reading and silently cheering both the old Claire and the new Claire. This is a very special book I highly reccomend.

Leave the Dogs at Home A Memoir (Audible Audio Edition) Claire S Arbogast Marie Hoffman University Press Audiobooks Books Reviews

A wonderful, well written, easy to read memoir of a life, lessons, loss. Claire rewrites the standards of how to think about and accept loss of a loved one but more than that, her reflections, inspirations, realizations, thoughts and techniques as she adapted, changed and moved on with a full life. A great gift for someone currently coping and for yourself. One of those books you'll want to put on your bookshelf to be opened again when you need it--and you will.
"Feel this.....?" Claire asks. "Leave the Dogs at Home" answers the question. Yeahh! "Little Miss Smarty Pants" lady suit, war protester, vegetarian vs. reclusive inventor, marine, meat eater... Jim and Claire; bump, joust, play, and love through years of friends with privileges accelerate to marriage of convenience, buying the farm, and "tumor masses blossoming on the computer screen with the velocity of a tornado sweeping across the countryside." Claire somehow grabs the thread and weaves a tapestry in which we are woven as well! Hits a nerve is an understatement.... She is a "survivor" and makes sure we know it.... I want to go past "Lexington" and "Monterey" and LAT!! Are we there yet? Thanks Claire Arbogast!
Managed to charm and amuse even while discussing many profound issues. High praise.
Nice book. Candid and personal.
This was a book I couldn't put down. I especially loved the first half, where the grief is real and raw. It was vivid in a way that made me feel less alone with my own grief. Highly recommend.
In her memoir, Leave the Dogs at Home, Claire Arbogast explores the new terrain of personal loss and negotiates a path back to happiness. This journey is heartbreaking, joyful and ultimately redemptive. The author skillfully articulates feelings that most of us know, but are unable to express. A great story that will touch everyone who reads it!
Claire's memoir carries the reader right alongside on her unexpected journey of loss and eventual transformation. I loved its raw honesty--I could identify with a lot of the feelings she described in the face of challenges and with handling life and relationships in general. Most stories sugarcoat and sentimentalize; Claire's does not. Her writing brings settings, situations, and personalities forward clearly and vividly. I honestly couldn't put it down once I started. Thank you, Claire, for sharing -)
