This really is one of the best short story collections I've read. I am a big fan of this author, so I knew I would enjoy the stories, but they far exceeded my expectations. They're funny, poignant, sad and weird all at the same time. Each and every one will make you think, laugh, or most likely both. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about buying some of AS King's novels, but hasn't quite made the leap. Read these stories first - you'll love them - then get to your nearest bookstore and buy some of her novels.Product details

I think that I have sufficiently extolled my love for A.S. King's writing and admiration for her as a person previously...but then she released her new collection of short stories, Monica Never Shuts Up. And now I'm finding it hard to shut up about King.
This collection has been advertised as King's first collection of stories "for adults" but really the fact that the majority of characters are adults is the only element that delineates these stories from King's novels for teenagers. To say that these stories have a wide range is an understatement. There really is a bit of everything in this collection, from contemporary stories to magical realism to soft science fiction. King isn't afraid to tackle big issues on new and interesting ways, and even her quiet stories are starkly funny and haunting. Even in her most (seemingly) innocuous tales, King seems to be gravitating towards and pushing boundaries, forcing her readers to think about the reasoning behind the choices we makes, how we deal with life's rough patches, and whether or not people have the capacity to change themselves. That same weirdness that we all know and love pervades these stories, and King's creativity and confidence make Monica Never Shuts Up a great pick for new and old readers alike.
My favorite stories in the collection? "Monica Never Shuts Up," "Raul Shows Me Things," "Harry's Giant," and "Tests I Failed." Seriously, either get a paperback copy or download the e-book. This is an amazing collection.
I'm not as thrilled with short stories as I am with a long novel. I gave this one a chance, but it's not doing it for me like all of her other books.

This is a gorgeous collection of short stories, many of which might make you cry. I was reading this book on a solo long flight and I eventually had to put it down because I was close to breaking into shoulder-shaking tears.
Her a Young Adult fiction is equally good.
King usually writes YA but these are definitely adult stories and they are all great. Usually when I'm reading a book of short stories there are a couple I don't like or don't even understand which allows me to toss the book down in discuss, if you can't write a story an average person will understand there should be a warning on the front stating "only for mind readers who are aware of my very person nightmares." Just kidding but you get what I mean.
None of that here, all these stories are so interesting, some sad, some scary and all page turners.
This collection of short stories is awesome, and varied from drama to sci-fi. My favorite one is the one about a guy in a prison doing hard labor in a river. The overall theme of this collection seems to be "tormented" characters. Their troubles are common enough anybody can relate to them, but enhanced to such levels you actually pray they never happen to you.
Looking forward to more from this author.
I really enjoyed this short story collection. The author has a strong voice, and all the stories move along at a good pace (I didn't skim at all, as I can sometimes be prone to doing). My favorite stories were Monica Never Shuts Up, Leroy Can Tell You When, and Butcher - but all of the selections were excellent. Many of King's stories have a feminist undercurrent, but they didn't feel "messagey" to me.
In my opinion, this book is best for adults or mature teens (I mention this since the author writes YA books). With 12 stand-alone stories I think it is a good value, too.
